a) Last night liquid panes of glass reflecting the brilliance of myriads of electric jets had securely closed us in: the two of us sitting in the opulence of the Crystal Bar and sipping champagne. Mithuri Aiya had said champagne was the drink after you clinched the kind of deals that had been coming his way recently! In the jungle the huddled trees, the tangle noiselessly eased the weight I carried upon my shoulders; lovingly, as a mother would do to a child. We might all be shod in leopards’ pads, I thought, for the noise we made: our small force plodding along mechanically, step by step, along with me. They carried burdens too; as carefully as I did mine.

b) “When have I ever worn this one? And this? And this?” She tossed the saris one by one from the drawers, then pried several from their hangers. They landed like a pile of tangled sheets on the bed. The room was filled with an intense smell of mothballs. ‘Send pictures,’ they write. ‘Send pictures of your new life.’ What picture can I send?” She sat, exhausted, on the edge of the bed, where there was now barely room for her. “They think I live the life of a queen, Eliot.” She looked around the blank walls of the room. “They think I press buttons and the house is clean. They think I live in a palace.”

   She will not stay the siege of loving terms,
   Nor bide th' encounter of assailing eyes,
   Nor ope her lap to saint-seducing gold.
   O, she is rich in beauty; only poor
   That, when she dies, with dies her store.

b) But love is blind and lovers cannot see
    The pretty follies that themselves commit;
